De wijnkous - The wine stocking
Fooled around with some aluminum foil lately, trying to disguise that bottle that you would like to submit for a blind tasting? Wine enthousiast and member of the Vlaamse Wijngilde, Bernard Herbert, designed the wine stocking for that purpose. This stocking smoothly fits any type of 75cl bottle and conceals labels and other information. Embossed logos on Jura or Chateauneuf-du-Pape bottles can be efficiently mantled by wrapping the bottle in a sheet of paper before sliding the wine stocking over it. The stocking comes in several colors, can be personalized with text or logo and can be numbered to support an entire blind tasting. In memoriam: Robert Mondavi

His parents came from the Italian Marche region and had bought the Charles Krug Winery (Napa, CA) in the 1930’s, where Robert Mondavi went to work after having obtained an economy degree at Stanford University.
The winery remained a family business for twenty years, but frequent clashes between Robert and his younger brother Peter eventually lead to a fist fight, which drove the brothers apart. At the age of 52, Robert Mondavi borrowed the money to start his own winery. Cold fermentation, stainless steel tanks and french oak barrels were the components for the recipe of his success.
1979 was the first vintage for Opus One, the almost legendary wine resulting from an association with Baron Philippe de Rothschild – who died twenty years ago, on January 20, 1988.
Of the three children - Tim, Michael and Marcia - the two brothers also clashed over the management style: history has a habit of repeating itself. That, together with tough competition and declining stock prices, led to a take-over of the family wine estate by Constellation Brands, end 2004. Robert Mondavi disagreed with the board and left and Tim also loosened his grip.
Fourty years after their split, the brothers Robert and Peter Mondavi made a one-time barrel of Cabernet blend with 50% of the grapes from each brother. At the 2005 annual Napa wine auction that barrel was sold for over four hundred thousand dollar.
In December 2007 Robert Mondavi was inducted into the California Hall of Fame at the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts in Sacramento (photograph).
